When natural disasters strike, in addition to being there to offer help and support, Lions are able to rely on disaster relief grants and funds from LCIF to assist with crucial immediate needs. Through the generosity and compassion of Lions and donors, in the last 10 years the Foundation has been able to award more than US$100 million in disaster relief funds.
Emergency Grants provide up to US$10,000 for districts impacted by a natural disaster that has affected at least 100 people, including tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and tsunamis. Lions district governors may apply for disaster relief funds to help meet immediate needs such as food, water, clothing and medical supplies. LCIF typically awards more than US$2 million in Emergency Grant funding each year.
When disasters occur on a much larger scale, Major Catastrophe Grants are awarded for long-term reconstruction projects. Major Catastrophe Grants are directed by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and cannot be applied for by a district. These grants provide significant funds for catastrophes with major international impact, such as the Japan earthquake and tsunami, China and Haiti earthquakes, Hurricane Katrina and the South Asia tsunami.
