Grants Approved at the April Board of Trustees Meeting: 90 Grants Approved Totaling US$4,227,875

A US$100,000 Core 4 grant was approved to support the partnership between Lions Quest and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The partnership will combine the Lions Quest program with the UNODC’s existing family-based life skills work in Central Asia and Southeastern Europe and will be piloted in Serbia and Montenegro.

Australia, District 201-V6 — A US$75,000 grant was given to construct a patient guest facility for cancer patients in Aldbury Hospital. More than 250,000 people will directly benefit from the new center.

Austria, District 114-O — US$37,500 was awarded to purchase windows for the main hall of the Children’s Cancer Association of Austria’s new camp for children with cancer. Approximately 500 children will benefit from the new camp.

Austria, District 114-W — US$37,500 was given to purchase an HVAC system for the Children’s Cancer Association of Austria’s new camp for children with cancer. Approximately 500 children will benefit from the new camp.

Belgium, District 112-A — US$75,000 was awarded to equip the Valier Institute for Mentally Disabled Adults with new transportation vehicles and needed equipment. This new equipment will benefit 101 people.

Bolivia, District S-2 — US$75,000 was awarded to expand a crowded Lions-supported public school through the construction of five new classrooms, a library, a sports field, a multipurpose room and an administrative room.

Cameroon, District 403-B — A US$73,552 grant was given to establish a Sickle Cell Anemia Department at the Laquintinie Hospital of Douala. The center will be available to the 600,000 people who have sickle cell anemia in Douala.

Canada, District 19-A — US$75,000 was given to equip the Genome Sciences Centre BC Cancer Agency in British Columbia with new research equipment. This will benefit the 122,000 British Columbians living with cancer.

Canada, District 5M-10 — US$21,500 was awarded to equip the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Ontario with modern ophthalmology equipment.

Canada, District U-1 — A US$43,137 grant was awarded to purchase ophthalmology equipment for the Ophthalmology Department at the Hospital Center of Amos. Up to 500 people each year will benefit from this equipment.

Colombia, District F-3 — US$72,308 was given to construct and equip a rehabilitation center, replacing an old one that is in poor condition. The new center will accommodate 150 people, which is 67 percent more than the old center could accommodate.

Croatia, District 126 — A US$7,500 grant was awarded to establish a library for children at the Pićine Primary School for Visually Impaired. The library will benefit 560 blind and visually impaired children annually.

Denmark, District 106-A — A US$16,681 grant was given to purchase generators for the Masanga General hospital in Sierra Leone, Africa. Approximately 130,000 patients will benefit each year.

Egypt, District 352 — US$20,000 was granted for a Lions-Aga Khan Development Network tree planting project in seven villages. Approximately 70,000 people will benefit from improved air quality, increased shade and community development.

France, District 103-CW — US$33,600 was given to equip the Lviv Pediatric Hospital in Ukraine. By upgrading old equipment, 130 children will be treated each year.

France, District 103-IE — US$30,000 was awarded to purchase equipment for the National Hospital of Niamy in Niger, Africa, through an International Assistance Grant. With the equipment, 4,400 surgeries can be completed annually.

France, District 103-SW — US$48,764 was awarded to expand a diabetes education program into five new towns in France. This expansion will reach an additional 110 diabetic people in need of education.

Germany, District 111-R — A US$75,000 grant was awarded to renovate the Rehabilitation Center at International Peace Village, where injured and ill children who cannot be medically treated in their native country can receive medical aid. Approximately 500 children will benefit from this renovation each year.

Ghana, District 403-A2 — US$56,238 was given to equip a new Lions Eye Clinic at the Tema General Hospital. Once fully operational, this will be the largest eye clinic in Ghana, serving 100,000 people each year.

Greece, District 117-B — US$7,860 was granted to provide a neonatal intensive care unit in the Hippokratio General Teaching Hospital with the proper equipment to handle a rise in premature births. Approximately 200 infants will benefit each year.

Honduras, District D-6 — US$25,000 was given to construct a training and rehabilitation center for the disabled. Approximately 1,000 people each year will benefit.

Iceland, District 109-A — US$75,000 was given to equip the Department of Ophthalmology in Landspitali at the University of Iceland, which has older, deteriorating equipment. An estimated 1,000 people per year will benefit from this upgraded equipment in both Districts 109-A and 109-B.

India, District 322-B1 — US$60,000 was given to expand the Lions Calcutta Greater Vidya Mandir School, which will increase enrollment to 1,400 students each year.

India, District 322-C2 — US$23,330 was awarded to equip a Lions Dental Clinic at Baripada. It is expected that 7,800 patients will be treated annually.

India, District 323-D1 — US$75,000 was awarded to upgrade the Lions’-founded Islamapur Medical Foundation Rajarambapu Blood Bank.

India, District 324-D6 — US$75,000 was awarded to equip the Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing with an outreach vehicle to test children and adults for speech, language, hearing and communication disorders. More than 6,000 people are expected to be screened each year.

Indonesia, District 307-A2 — A US$56,938 grant was given for a clean water and sanitation project in Indonesia. Six villages with a combined 94,735 residents will directly benefit from this project.

Israel, District 128 — A US$75,000 grant will equip a playground at the Four Seasons Community Park for the disabled with many rehabilitative features for the 9,000 disabled children and adults in the communities near the playground.

Israel, District 128 — US$75,000 was given to provide the ophthalmology department at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center with upgraded equipment. This new equipment will help the medical center perform up to 500 retinal operations and 3,500 cataract operations per year.

Italy, District 108-AB — A US$13,000 was granted for the construction of a dormitory for orphaned children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is estimated that 40 homeless children will benefit from the dormitory.

Italy, District 108-IA3 — US$37,750 was granted for the construction of a primary school in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to replace an older, smaller building. Two hundred and forty children will benefit from the new school building.

Italy, District 108-IB1 — US$57,600 to renovate and upgrade a burn unit in the Saint Jean de Dieu District Hospital in Benin, Africa. The upgraded burn unit expects to treat 1,500 patients each year, and will be able to handle a larger number of burn victims if needed.

Italy, District 108-IB3 — US$18,500 was awarded to purchase a blood analyzer for the Fatima Health Center in Kenya. The equipment will benefit the 10,000 people living in the service area.

Italy, District 108-LA — A US$75,000 grant was awarded to renovate the Dynamo Camp for Children with Chronic Illness, allowing for children with more severe physical conditions to be able to attend. The renovation will allow 50 additional children to attend the camp each year, for a total of approximately 1,050 children annually.

Japan, District 330-B — US$32,467 was awarded to expand and equip a health clinic in Cat Lam Village in Vietnam. The expansion will double the number of patients able to be served from 6,000 to 12,000 per year.

Japan, District 334-A — US$15,585 was granted to equip a hospital in Vietnam with obstetric and gynecological equipment. Around 700 to 800 people each month will benefit from this new equipment.

Japan, District 334-A — US$27,273 was given to renovate the Akatsuki orphanage for abused and neglected children in Japan. The renovation will serve the 31 children who currently live in the orphanage.

Japan, District 336-C — A US$18,000 grant was given to purchase a transport vehicle for the Tsutsuji Social Welfare Foundation, a residential facility serving severely physically disabled people. The new vehicle will serve the 28 residents with 748 monthly trips.

Japan, District 336-C — US$47,923 was awarded to equip the Hiroshima Eye Bank with a new machine for corneal extractions, benefiting 60 patients each year.

Japan, District 337-A — US$16,500 was given to renovate fire engines from Japan for the Philippines through an International Assistance Grant.

Kenya, District 411-A — US$75,000 was awarded to expand the Malia Academy School at Mwingi, a school for orphans and disadvantaged youth. Through the expansion, 1,280 students will benefit.

Malaysia, District 308-A2 — US$45,239 was awarded to purchase an ambulance for the Kota Kinabalu Lions Ambulance Service Society to address a shortage of emergency vehicles. It is estimated that the new ambulance will assist 840 additional people each year.

Malaysia, District 308-B1 — A US$75,000 grant was given to equip a Lions Dialysis Center with 12 new machines. Almost 30,000 dialysis treatments are provided each year.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-A1 — A US$75,000 grant was given to equip a music program for the visually impaired, allowing 11,000 residents access to new equipment and musical instruments.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-A3 — A US$75,000 grant was awarded to purchase and equip a mobile vision screening vehicle for children. An estimated 35,000 children will be screened by this vehicle each year.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-B1 — US$75,000 was given to purchase and equip a mobile women’s cervical cancer screening unit. Approximately 6,000 women will be screened annually.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-B2 — US$69,000 was awarded to purchase and equip a mobile women’s cancer and health screening vehicle. Up to 6,000 women will benefit annually.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-C2 — A US$75,000 grant was awarded to purchase three transport vehicles for the disabled. Approximately 605 individuals with spinal cord injuries will be served each year.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-C3 — US$75,000 was awarded to equip the Chen Chou Juvenile Guidance and Learning Center, a vocational training center for at-risk youth. Around 90 students will benefit from the new equipment.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-D1 — US$75,000 was given to purchase 10 transport vehicles for the disabled. These vehicles will serve around 900 people monthly.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-E1 — US$40,000 was awarded to purchase and equip a mobile health screening vehicle for low-income senior citizens. Up to 14,000 seniors will be screened each year.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-F — A US$38,000 grant was given to purchase a transport vehicle for the disabled and elderly to bring them to and from the Keelung City Municipal Hospital. Approximately 2,000 people will be transported each year from the vehicle.

MD300 Taiwan, District 300-G1 — US$75,000 was given to equip a hearing screening program for children. More than 18,500 children will be screened each year.

Mexico, District B-1 — US$16,500 was awarded to equip the Tijuana Lions Optometry Clinic with two new machines. Through this grant, the number of people able to be seen in this clinic will rise from 1,500 to 5,000 annually.

Morocco, District 416 — US$66,275 was awarded to renovate the Malaika Center Rabat, a school for children with Down syndrome. The school will serve 60 children.

New Zealand, District 202-J — US$75,000 was awarded to purchase an MRI scanner for Timaru Public Hospital. This new scanner will be made available to the entire population of the surrounding areas, approximately 53,000 residents.

New Zealand, District 202-K — US$35,583 was given to purchase an eye laser for the children’s hospital in Middlemore Hospital. Approximately 80 people will benefit each year from the new laser.

Paraguay, District M-2 — A US$38,250 grant was given to expand and equip a Lions Ophthalmology Center. The number of patients treated is expected to increase from 240 to 670 each year.

Poland, District 121 — US$55,908 was given to build a multi-sensory trail for the disabled at the Bratek Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled. The trail can be used by 15 children at a time, with all 120 children at the center being able to use the trail and equipment.

Poland, District 121 — US$7,273 was given to build a playground for the disabled at the Special School in Gdynia, Poland. Approximately 120 disable children and young adults will benefit from this playground.

Republic of Korea, District 354-B — US$100,000 was given to expand diabetes education and provide screenings, with approximately 10,000 people benefitting.

Republic of Korea, District 354-D — A grant of US$36,000 was given to expand a school for children of foreign workers by building a library which will serve 1,200 students each year.

Republic of Korea, District 354-H — US$75,000 was awarded to construct a Lions eyeglass recycling center. Approximately 40,000 eyeglasses will be processed through the center each year.

Republic of Korea, District 355-C — US$69,400 was given to purchase transport vehicles for four centers that serve the disabled and are in need of transportation vehicles. Approximately 136,000 people will benefit annually.

Republic of Korea, District 356-B — US$56,600 was awarded to purchase and equip two mobile kitchens to feed the elderly and the homeless in Cheonan. Each mobile kitchen will serve 30,000 people each year, for a total of 60,000.

Togo, District 403-A2 — US$50,000 was given to construct a health care clinic in the remote village of Kpasside, Togo. All 44,000 residents will benefit from having access to medical care closer to home.

Turkey, District 118-E — A US$5,000 grant was given to expand a voice library the Rehabilitation Center for the Blind, which produces books on CD and on tapes. As many as 500,000 blind and low-vision people will benefit from this project each year.

Turkey, District 118-R — US$20,306 was awarded to purchase ophthalmology equipment for pediatric screenings in the Izmir Education and Research Hospital, where there is no pediatric ophthalmology department. Through this grant, 600 children will be screened each year.

Turkey, District 118-U — A US$55,561 grant was given to rebuild and equip a primary school and preschool in Van, Turkey, after destruction from an earthquake in 2011. The primary school will serve 240 children each year, and the preschool will serve 60 children each year.

Ukraine — US$15,552 was given to purchase low vision equipment for the Slavyansk Orphanage. The project will serve 40 children with low vision each year.

California, USA, District 4-A1 — A US$28,726 grant was given to expand the California Lions Camp – Camp Pacific for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The renovation and new equipment will increase the number of campers each year from 200 to approximately 1,200 annually.

California, USA, District 4-L5 — A US$74,822 grant was awarded for a paved disabled trail system at Teresita Pines, the only camp in the Los Angeles area serving the disabled community. Around 600 blind and physically impaired children will benefit each year.

Florida, USA, District 35-I — US$49,950 was awarded to provide preschool screening programs with equipment for hearing and vision screening. Up to 5,000 children will benefit annually from screenings with the equipment.

Florida, USA, District 35-I — US$75,000 was awarded to expand and renovate the Bonita Spring Lions Eye Clinic. Through this expansion, the number of patient exams and surgeries provided by volunteer doctors will double.

Georgia, USA, District 18-E — A US$16,625 grant was given for a Lions-Habitat home in Griffin, Georgia. The home will benefit a family living with severe disability and will be built according to the standards set by the Americans with Disability Act.

Illinois, USA, District 1-D — US$22,142 was awarded to provide the Center for Sight and Hearing with equipment to treat children. Approximately 300 children will be served in the first year that the equipment is received, with a steady increase in following years.

Indiana, USA, Multiple District 25 — US$37,500 was awarded to purchase an ocular surgery simulator for the University of Indiana Department of Ophthalmology. By training surgeons on this simulator, thousands of people will benefit from improved eye care.

Kentucky, USA, District 43-K — A US$11,155 grant was awarded to purchase vision screeners. By upgrading the equipment Lions use to screen children’s vision, 5,172 children will be screened each year.

Michigan, USA, District 11-B1 — US$4,500 was approved to purchase a vision screener for the Lions of Michigan Project Kidsight Program. This additional vision screener will double the number of children who can have their vision screened to 2,000 annually.

Michigan, USA, District 11-C1 — US$9,441 was awarded to equip a Lions eyeglass recycling center. This updated equipment will help Lions to process the 400,000 pairs of eyeglasses that they receive each year.

Michigan, USA, District 11-D2 — A US$4,655 grant was awarded to purchase a vision screener for their participation in the Lions of Michigan Project Kidsight Program. The additional vision screener will double the number of children who can have their vision screened to 1,000 annually.

Minnesota, USA, District MD-5M — A US$75,000 grant was awarded to equip a Lions Children’s Hearing Clinic at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. This new equipment will benefit 960 children each year.

Nevada, USA, District 46 — US$5,495 was awarded to establish and equip a prison eyeglass recycling program. This program will support Lions in Sight’s missions around the world, which typically distributes 15,000 pairs of recycled eyeglasses each year.

New Jersey, USA, District 16-A — US$20,122 was awarded to equip the Lions Eye Bank of New Jersey with new diagnostic equipment. More than 1,100 patients will benefit each year.

North Carolina, USA, Multiple District 31 — US$75,000 was granted to replace a mobile screening unit. It is estimated that 14,800 people benefit from vision and hearing screenings from the mobile screening unit.

Oregon, USA, District 36-O — A US$30,598 grant was awarded to renovate the Oral Hull Camp for the Blind. Before the upgrade, the camp benefited 1,500 blind and visually impaired campers each year. By upgrading the facility, 450 additional campers will be able to participate each year.

Pennsylvania, USA, District 14-P — US$60,435 was given to expand the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley’s laboratory. Through this expansion, newer equipment for more modern procedures will be purchased. Around 1,000 patients will be served each year.

South Carolina, USA, District 32-A — US$10,107 was awarded to purchase vision screeners, serving 12,000 residents each year. Lions will focus mainly on screening children.

South Carolina, USA, Multiple District 32 — US$17,500 was given to equip the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of South Carolina, increasing the number of beneficiaries from 360 to 500 each year.

Virginia, USA, District 24-A — US$72,649 was given to establish a Lions Core 4 Diabetes program, which will educate and screen underserved communities against diabetes. The program will hold a total of 2,500 diabetic screenings, with up to 1,000 people also receiving diabetic retinopathy screenings. Lions will also hold 200 diabetes self-management courses, reaching 500 people.
